history of miami

The history of Miami has quite a different background. Miami, the second largest city in the state of Florida and the 45th largest city in the United States, is located between the Florida Everglades and Biscayne Bay. Miami was officially established as a city on July 28, 1896. Miami is a tri-ethnic city with a different image and culture compared to the classical structure of other American cities. The majority of the population consists of Cubans, Haitians, and Caribbean so-called Hispanics.

History of Miami from Past to Present

Located at the very tip of the state of Florida and very close to many islands in the Caribbean, this city has gone through a lot of others throughout history. Miami was a forested area covered with dense trees 1000-2000 years ago, where Native Americans lived and hunted to make a living. the natives were also fed by tropical fruits and fishing. There was no settled life here until the Europeans came.

Discovery of the Americas

When the continent of America was discovered in 1492, one of the first places to be discovered was the Florida beaches. Spaniard Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Miami in 1513 and was the first European to find it. de Leon and his men had explored Miami from the ship and watched from afar, and had most likely never set foot in the area. At the beginning of the 1500s, the place where the city of Miami is today was discovered by the Europeans, but it was after 1550 that European immigrants began to settle here.

Coming of Europe

When the Europeans started to come to Florida, the diseases would increase due to the microbes they brought with them from Europe, albeit unwillingly, and the wars among the native tribes would increase. therefore, the population of the region began to decline rapidly shortly after the Europeans set foot here. After that, until the 1700s, today’s Miami region did not attract much attention. When Europeans migrated to America by ships, they often landed where Miami is, but they did not stop here and continued on their way and lived with other Europeans in the inner parts of the country.

Pirate Activities

The pirate activities that emerged in the Caribbean also kept the Miami region busy. Although the pirates did not attack here much, they did not hesitate to use the forested areas here for rest and hiding. In the 1800s, many of the pirates turned into treasure hunters when the Europeans fought against the pirates and began sinking pirate ships and executing the pirates they captured. Some of these people settled in Miami and some of these people were given land titles by the American government, which distributed title deeds to those who settled on vacant lands at that time.
